nothing's better than a story...
True story. A lecturer presents to two groups of students. She tells Group A that what she’s about to cover will be assessed after the lecture, but also that her lecture will contain a lie. She omits the reference to the lie with Group B. Apart from her simple brief, she covers the exact same material in both lectures. So who performs better in the assessment?
Group A achieves a significantly higher result. The reference to a lie was the learning hook. It was such a simple way to increase her students’ attention, capturing their imaginations and enabling them to listen more effectively. Listening is paramount to the success of eLearning, as unlike face-to-face, when we're training online, we often can't assess our audience's enagagement 'on the fly'.
Spoon feeding in the long run just teaches us the shape of the spoon. Learning hooks are the simple, but ultimately brilliant things that enhance retention, change performance and increase ROI in our learning initiatives.
what we mean by 90ten Learning
THE LEARNING HOOK BELIEVES IN LEARNING CAMPAIGNS, NOT JUST EVENTS. IT’S ABOUT 90TEN LEARNING SOLUTIONS.
10% of organisational learning comes from formalised learning experiences (study, classrooms, online courses), 20% through feedback on performance, with the remaining 70% happening all around us. Adding the 70% and 20% together, we see that the majority of our learning comes from what we do, our experiences, the water cooler conversations, the staff barbecue and Friday drinks.
The Learning Hook focusses on the learning campaign; it's about using the 10% to exploit the remaining 90%. Focussing just on the 10% of the learning opportunity results in a training 'non-event'. Now whether you're a believer in the 70-20-10 or our 90ten, believe in this: For true change, we must exploit the formal learning experiences to tap into the social, the informal and every day work practice. Teachers know that children learn as much at play as they do in the classroom... just as we do as adults!
Let us provide you the campaign: true change and ROI will be achieved by maintaining the initiative, reinforcing the performance change and providing ease of access to deliver a triple J experience; Just in time, Just enough and Just for me.
Make sure you explore our blog for much more on this topic.
So what's the hook?
The Learning Hook connects knowledge to action. The Learning Hook is smart, it's what inspires learners, it makes listening easy, it's what we value in instructional design. Our online courses and systems communicate. Whether they're high to low-end, PC or mobile learning based, HTML, eLearning authoring tools, apps or video driven, linking knowledge to action is at their heart.
It's our voice that communicates, it's our design that sticks, it's The Learning Hook that gets below the surface for learners to take a bite.
